<<hmmmm, wonder why tech stock prices, especially component makers, have fallen?>> Ron, I too got the Dell catalogue and noticed the same machine that you did. I also got the MUEI catalog that advertised the same machine for $2199. What impressed me was how much more machine you got for less money. I bot a Micron 266 PII similiarly equipped, with a 19" monitor about the time you bought your Dell. My outlay was about $2,800.
Yes the Dram manufacturers and HD mfg'ers have been hit. But the main reason for that, IMO, is overcapacity in both those industries that brought on severe price competiton. The box makers have not (yet) suffered that fate, and in fact have probably maintained their margins as commodity prices (dram and HD) have fallen along with the collaspe of asia, and their currencies, where much of that stuff is manufactured.
The law of supply and demand remains intact. The lower prices have stimulated demand and the box makers have been the main beneficiaries. The box makers that execute well will be profitable. The component industries are behaving as typical commodity businesses where inability to supply demand leads to over construction which results in glut.
PS, did you notice that real nice flat screen monitor in the dell catalog that was available for only $850 upgrade from the basic package. I think flat screen monitors will be coming down in price dramatically and could be a fertile field for investing. Larrry
