Got to differ with you on the "one roof" concept.

A lot more national companies (or companies in the process of going national) are actively trying to disperse their operations so as to obtain a true national presence, and to create diversity of culture and perspective within the larger org. The downside to centralization is everyone tends to act and think alike, and often it's hard to obtain employees with particular skills. For example, in Washington there's a huge commercial culture centered around telecom, but it's hard to find anyone with a good retail background. The advent of internet, corporate intranets, e-mail, low priced long distance calls, teleconferencing, etc. actually make it relatively easy to set up divisions where they are best suited.
