>>does this "preannoucnment" have any negative implications for MMC Networks (mmcn)?

I don't think so other than psychologically. MMC was being valued relative to GALTF when the MMC IPO came but MMC's position is more differentiated. The entire group will likely be under pressure but I expect LEVL to be hardest hit by this news. GALTF and LEVL supply more commodity chips than MMC. MMC's prices are more stable. You have to wonder if BRCM's entry into the LAN environment is hurting everybody at the low end. BRCM supposedly has a design advantage which can allow them to do good gross margins at very low prices. GATLF was obviously caught in a product transition so that is part of the explanation but down 20-25% sequentially when they guided analysts on the last CC to 5-7% growth must mean pricing was significantly weaker than GALTF expected during the quarter.

To Trader Dave,

Don't know. This group seems to be a lot like the graphics and audio/video guys of 2-3 years ago. Its boom/bust. Sustainable growth isn't possible. SIII, TRID, CHPS, ESST, CUBE, OAKT. The current group is/were hot because they are communications related rather than PC related but IMO, getting in a LAN product doesn't seem any better than being on a PC motherboard. Same cutthroat business dynamics. After all, NSM can't even grow. Gotta wonder about TXN as well.

I think MMC and PMC are the only two with sockets they can defend (read 'value-add').
