This is an old article, but I still think it's one of the more interesting ones on the subject of S3. techweb.com

The article does take into consideration most of the follow up comments on the thread, but......well, I guess it's just one of those things that keeps sticking in the back of my mind. When one of the ANALysts on the conference call asked if they had plans to reverse engineer a merced chip, their response was "no comment". I suppose that could mean anything but it is a little different than "not no way, not no how". I get the impression that the relationship between S3 and USC is pretty tight. It seems to me that there may be some resources available to S3 beyond what they have in house. As far as I know the .25 micron process S3 is using in the Savage chip is coming out of USC and the USC home page has a fair amount of PR fluff about design capabilities. No doubt 800# gorillas are dangerous prey, but with a big enough gun, one can always plink from a safe distance. Mostly idle speculation on my part while I'm dinking around waiting for the price to go back up but I am more than a little bit curious about what they have in mind with all the patents they have been buying and substantial increases in R&D spending over the last year.
