Thomas, >>This is not good.<< Agreed, this is deja vu all over again. In fact it is forth quarter in a row of earnings disappointment.

Value Line's quarterly update on COHR is being printed now for release next week. The March 13 report says:
"Coherent began its rebound in the December period. Earnings failed to match those of the year-earlier quarter for the second time in a row, but there was progress on a sequential basis. A similar situation seems likely in the current (March) period, but the second half of fiscal 1998 (ends October 3rd) will probably be strong enough for the year to compare favorably to fiscal 1997.

Other factors favor recovery, too....Almost $1 million worth of orders were received for the EPIC....The board of directors expressed optimism, too. They didn't come right out and say that profits would rise. But there would have been little point in initiating a 2-for-1 stock split if Coherent's leadership had negative thoughts...."

Wrong, wrong, wrong. My guess is COHR will dip below twenty soon and Value Line will drop its Timeliness rating from 3 to 4 (1 to 5 scale) within a few weeks. A 4 means avoid.

If it eventually gets down into the 15-17 area I might take another look for long term hold.

I am out of COHR right now and would have bought below twenty but not now. If there is a BIG drop Monday, my wild guess is that a dead cat bounce by the next or following week might be a good selling oportunity. The new, but clueless Value Line report due this coming Friday might stir up some bargain hunters in the following week.
