Bama, I will almost promise you the crowd control drill they went through was quite politically correct, and not even close to the real thing. If the Marines had had their way it would have been a real riot. When I came back from Nam in March of 68 I ended up in LeJeune for 18 weeks, which if your old enough to remember was one of the summer's with major riots around the country. We went through riot control drills and the unit's that were slated for riot control duty were on only a few hours standby to be trucked to Marine Air Base Cherry Point and flown to the riot location. I don't remember any unit having to go, but we would have ended a riot rather quickly if a unit of Nam vet's had been turned lose on the rioter's. When we practiced, the unit that played the rioter's were allowed to bring anything they wanted to the PLAY riot, baseball bats, bricks, rocks you name it and it was OK (rifles and pistols being the exception). There were always Corpsmen on site and they were put to use, people always ended up in sick bay. I always wondered what would have happened had we been called up, a lot of us had been in the bush and had had enough of being on the receiving end at times. In politically correct time's we live in today, the patient's run the hospital.
