Carl, I think that the second reference was only for Japanese companies. It is still on the low side, however. I think that the 40 MM annual starts (for 200 mm) makes more sense. Take a ball park of 2000 selling price of final devices per wafer and the 200 MM segment would get you to $80 Billion out of a current market around $150 billions total for all chips. Japan shipped about $32 Bill in 1997 vs a world shipment of $137 Bill, or 23%. According to Semiconductor International, they are supposed to drop to $29.5 out of $142 (billions) or only 20%. That still does not "jive" with the two sets of numbers above, even if the assumption is that only the Japanese wafer starts are considered. It is possible, however, that to get back to 20% share some of their SEA joint ventures account for the balance.
