Jack did I say companies were reducing their expenditures for PCs? I said they were trying to reduce their cost of ownership. If you haven't heard this, well, no wonder ;) Not sure what you are trying to imply, but getting back to our main issue which is the ASPs.

...the following is copied from a recent GS report: "In addition, Dell has recognized the streets focus on recent ASP declines. While we attribute a large portion of the decline to the spill-over effects of Compaq's liquidation pricing, Dell was quick to point out that although average revenue per unit has declined from a peak of $2,823 in 1995 (calendar) to $2,654 in 1997..."

now, why did ASPs decline 8% year over year with the triple digit growth in their server biz?

As for the rest of your points, how many desktops out there use MS Project? Did everyone suddenly become a Project Manager? Don't assume what you need (I saw you are one based on your profile) is what everyone else needs.

If the apps needed were truely cpu centric, then more to my point they will start moving them back to the server. Thin Client Thick Server, like in the good old days.
