Ian:re: trading costs and effect of taxes:

OK, lets assume:

1. commissions continue to decline, so my broker charges me zero commissions, and just makes money lending me margin money, and getting a kick-back on the spread. This, actually, isn't too far-fetched. For me, the spread is the only non-trivial cost of trading.

2. The Democrats adopt a protectionist policy. In 2001, President Bush (the Younger) and the remaining Democrats agree to abolish all capital gains and income taxes, retroactive to 1998. The government will be funded by a VAT, and tariffs on Korean chips.

3. The heavens will open and the angels will sing, and pigs will be seen flying over Washington.

Seriously, I can't think of any non-complicated way to take taxes into account in this game.
