She lost power due to her long tenure and her stand against political union with Europe. The long knives were out but she chose her successor, defeating her enemies one last time.

So are most. Blair is the first modern Labour leader because he adopted Thatcherism wholesale and is building on her reforms, not retreating back to the darkness of Labour past. Thatcher did what most great leaders do - just as she changed her party, bending it to her will, she also changed the opposition, making Blair possible. By any standard, Thatcher modernized British politics and with the US showed the way for the entire World.
