Paul,

I understand that CYRIX has a total monopoly on MediaGX chips

When Intel's interest is at stake, I always expect a knee jerk reply like this from you. I am not surprised by it anymore, or angry. You may have some contractual obligations that I don't know about. Or you may just go blind when Intel's interest is at stake (compared to any other values).

Presently, Intel tries very hard to at least create an impression of compliance with the US anti-trust laws. Even under these conditions, Intel manages to achieve virtual stranglehold on a big part of semiconductor industry. Suppose there were no anti-trust laws. Don't you thing that the stranglehold would be tighter?

Suppose Andy's dream came true, the x86 competition disappeared, and any software written anywhere would have to be written for x86 processor.

Why would Intel spend billions on new process technologies? Why not just keep the price of Pentium classic at $600 and use the billion's conquering industries in which Intel is not a monopoly yet.

Anyway, as I said semiconductors want to be cheap. Or actually, Gordon Moore said somewhat differently. But there may be a corollary to the theory that $500 processor will do twice as much in 18 months. It's may be something like "Today's $500 processor will be $250 in 18 months." (which these days is even less than 18 months)

That's where the technology is going. The only reason we can take advantage of it is because Intel's grip on the industry is not as complete as Joe Stalin's.

Joe
