Cox Communications Selects ANTEC to Exclusively Supply Cornerstone Cable Telephony in 8 Markets
Cable Telephony is Readily Available in Orange County, New England and Omaha
DENVER, June 8 /PRNewswire/ -- ANTEC Corporation (Nasdaq: ANTC - news) announced today that it has reached an agreement with Cox Communications, Inc. (NYSE: COX - news) to supply the Cornerstone cable telephony system for Cox systems in Orange County, Calif., New England (Metro Hartford, Conn. and Rhode Island), San Diego, Phoenix, Hampton Roads, Va., New Orleans, Omaha and Oklahoma City. The five-year exclusive contract is valued in excess of $100 million. This agreement represents the largest deployment of the Cornerstone system to date. Cornerstone is designed and manufactured by Arris Interactive, a joint venture between ANTEC and Nortel.
''The deployment of cable telephony allows us to be a single, one-stop provider of total communications,'' said Chuck McElroy, Vice President of Residential Broadband Services for Cox Communications. ''We really feel we have a partner with ANTEC,'' added McElroy. ''We have a sincere interest on both sides, ours and theirs, to make this successful.''
''We are pleased to provide Cornerstone for Cox,'' said Bob Stanzione, President, ANTEC Corp. ''Cox Communications' move into cable telephony is further proof that HFC telephony is absolutely real and a viable business opportunity for the cable industry,'' said Stanzione. ''No other network can match broadband's capability.''
The Cornerstone system has already been deployed in Cox's Orange County, New England and Omaha markets. ANTEC will continue to supply the Cornerstone system, as well as training and installation assistance.
Cornerstone is the most widely deployed cable telephony product in the world. It is comprised of two basic components: the Host Digital Terminal and the Voice Port. At the headends/hubs, the Host Digital Terminal provides the interface to the digital switch and the public switched telephone network. The Cornerstone Voice Ports provide digital intelligence at the subscriber's premises and interfaces with their telephones, fax machines and computers, making it ideal for single-family dwellings, multi-dwelling units and small businesses.
''By working with ANTEC, Arris and Nortel, we can connect the cable network, the switch and the Cornerstone Voice Port on the side of the house, and we'll be able to track the operating systems that support those pieces of equipment to ensure that they are integrated and working together effectively,'' said McElroy.
