this might not have anything to do specifully with AXC but the mutual fund companies have until thursday, October 31 to sell stocks at a loss and be able to offset (or net) against capital gains booked earlier. this will reduce the amount of capital gian distributions they will have to report and distribute to their shareholders prior to year-end. shareholders who re-invest their dividends and capital gain distributions don't like to pay taxes on gains they do not get the cash for. a lot of mutual fund companies are thinning out their losers now because of this. a lot of stocks at or near their yearly low continue to get pounded. i would suspect you might see a recovery occur in some of these next week. those that jumped on AXC in the big run-up this spring might be closing out positions now, before returning a little later. we'll see soon if this is the case. of course, nothing like some good positive news on the company will be the thing that's gets us rolling again. thanks for the great post Jubimer!!!!! =============================================================

He has been implying that recent volume surges are a sign of insiders taking advantage of the options market which cause's big volume surges. They were up big time 2 days ago. Out of porportion to the increase of the stock volume. If you KNEW something was going to happen before November 15 then you would buy options for more bang for the buck. Some people watch the divergance of the options volume to stock volume and buy or sell stock accordingly. Zero puts is a bullish indication also. I look at this occasionaly but have found that sometimes the big surges are caused by people who just think they KNOW what is going to happen. ============================================================= Subj: Options Date: 96-10-30 18:00:53 EST From: SDCELIS

Let me throw a couple of monkey wrenches in just for argument sake:
1> Options activity is useful, but it's hard to tell if it's "smart" money or "dumb" money at work. If you think about it, 20 contracts at $1 is only $2,000. That's not much for someone to gamble around with. Now, if daily activity jumps from 100 contracts to 3,000 contracts, it's definitely worth looking at.
2> Seems that everybody is so optimistic here (including me). But it's hard not to think about WHO is selling the stock then? If everybody and their dog loves this stock, who's selling it? I would think that mutual funds were smarter that getting on the bandwagon that lots of "average joe" jumped on. If they owned this stock, they own it dirt cheap. I seem to recall that Fidelity was the one that had a huge position that it was dumping from $15 on down that it owned for less than $3.50

Spectra Logic's Alexandria Backup and Archival Librarian is the industry's premier, mainframe-performance solution for protecting UNIX Filesystems, relational database (Oracle, Informix, etc.) and Internet Web Server environments. Alexandria is the leader in "hot" database backup performance, low-CPU overhead and unrivaled scalability.
"Our customers are experiencing significant growth in the size of databases being required to support their businesses. With the inherent scalability of ptx/ESBM (Alexandria) , Sequent customers have the ability to non-disruptively increase their backup performance as their disk storage capacity grows," explained Sequent's Fry.
Alexandria also provides the widest range of support for storage devices including, 4mm, Exabyte 8mm, Ampex, DLT (Digital Linear Tape) 4000 and 7000 products, EMASS Library Systems, HP Optical Systems, IBM 3494/3590, Sony DTF and AIT, Spectra Logic Libraries, and StorageTek Robotic Library Systems. ============================================================= Subj: Re:Question for Steven7373 Date: 96-11-01 10:23:51 EST From: MQUAD

As always, just one investor's opinion. Personally I greatly prefer a very low level of analyst coverage and institutional ownership in the small caps I own. By the time that many analysts and institutions jump aboard - if that day comes - the stock has usually made a great portion of its upward move. That is often pretty close to a good time to sell. We all know that Ampex had a grueling decline, and has been in a trading range for quite awhile now. It will take hard news, or a general market crash to move it out of that range. For me, one point of keepered comfort is .... while years of R&D on a product that proves unsalable is a very possible and understandable mistake ... building a sales infrastructure around a product they don't have a strong clue they definitely will sell seems much less a likely error. From my point of view - long term - AXC has tremendous 19mm storage and instrumentation potential , KM potential, medium term royalty expansion potential, and way out on the horizon, HDTV and digital broadcasting potential. There are always risks, but I expect Ampex to be a very worthwhile long term hold. I'd buy more on dips, but I don't have the cash. When my patience starts to wear to a thin film, I personally just add a keepered layer - which did get me 38% more Halloween candy last night. ============================================================= Subj: Re:Institutions and Analysts Date: 96-11-01 12:36:06 EST From: SCH ZX11

I added this week at 6 5/8. I bought some today in fact, a few minutes before the close. At the end of the day the bid got very strong on the stock and I was happy to see that.
My cost in the stock is now about 9, and it is my largest single holding.
I had some interesting discussions this week with some west coast tech people who are very close to the company and very up to the minute in the area that AXC is involved.
Based on what I am hearing, I bought more.
At these levels, the risk/reward is better than anything else I can find out there.....If we are all wrong, AXC is 5. When we are right..... its 20+.
Im long and will get longer if I have to.

Thought you might be interested to know that Ampex will present at the 1996 Head/Media Technology Review in Las Vegas. They present on Sunday, November 17th. The title of their presentation is "Magnetic Recording Media is a Keeper" It is presented by T. Coughlin, who is one of the co-authors of the cover article on Keepered in the October issue of Data Storage Magazine. I find this interesting because the Review is one of the Pre-Comdex conferences. Comdex begins Monday November 18 in Las Vegas. So, Ampex will represented at Comdex.
Also, 10Q should be due out in the next week or so. I think the evidence is growing that a keepered contract is in hand. My guess is a major disk drive manufacturer will introduce a "keepered drive" at Comdex. ============================================================= Subj: Re:Institutions and Analysts Date: 96-11-02 12:44:43 EST From: MF Muse

I'm very surprised Ampex would issue an article in a leading technological mag. about keepered media. Ampex has been extremely quiet regarding the prospects of KM. I have called investor relations many times have have gotten nowhere. I'm assuming this article written by two Ampex employees was cleared by Ampex people, especially Bramson. This article confirms my expectation of a km contract, but leaves open the question of who and dollar wise. ============================================================= Subj: Re: data storage article Date: 96-11-03 21:17:15 EST From: Dugasarc
Data Storage article was pure fluff, also a very good piece. It is ligt technolcally and is intended for managers and all sorts of lite science folks in the field.
Ampex puposre for this is one of building presence. It is a very good idea to establish this idea ( a very very old one at that) in the search for higher areal densities. KM has problems such as non-standard dc bias current required in the inductive read head and use in MR heads is not quite cleat yet.
However I hope for great success because the pulse width slimming effect of KM is very real, however the non-Lorentzian nature of the pulse is a problem for channel folks.
Lets hope the progress continues and their patents are not worthless pieces of paper. If it hits, it may hit big. If it can work with MR head then it could be tremendous but don't hold your breath on that one, just yet.

Over the last few months, AXC has drifted down to the middle 6's, only to spurt to high 7's, low 8's in 2 or 3 days. It is especially discouraging when the Dow is setting new highs, NASDAQ is up and AXC is down 1/8 or 1/16th. Ampex'll have many moments of truth over the next few years.Of course. But the first of these draws very near. On the edge of my seat in Maryland. ( Dugasarc, I believe AXC holds patents that take care of the channel concerns. They just didn't include them in the initial KM testing, believing that that would entail "too much to ask" in terms of assembly line overhaul. For now.) ============================================================= Subj: Re:3Q 10-Q is available Date: 96-11-06 13:25:35 EST From: Trader37
The following are some snippets from AXC Third Quarter 10Q, please all - read it in its entirety before trading on this. But I think it is very positive! The company gives many cautions but the following are interesting:
1- In October 1996, the Company's Board of Directors approved the sale of 400,000 shares of common stock to the Company's Chairman and Chief Executive, Edward J. Bramson, in order to provide him with an equity incentive for his continued service to the Company. The purchase price for these shares was $6.875 per share, which represented the fair market value of the shares on the date the transaction was approved by the Board. Mr. Bramson acquired the shares through a limited liability company formed and controlled by him, which purchased the shares by paying $550,000 in cash and by issuing a five-year promissory note for the balance. The promissory note bears interest at the applicable federal rate, and is collateralized by the shares. The cash portion of the purchase price was added to the Company's working capital in the fourth quarter of 1996. A portion of the shares is subject to repurchase by the Company in the event that Mr. Bramson ceases to serve as an officer and director of the Company within certain periods expiring three years after the date of sale.
2- During the third quarter of 1996, Ampex participated with certain hard disk drive and head manufacturers in tests of new generations of high-performance inductive heads with keepered media. The Company believes that all of the disk drive manufacturers with which it has been actively evaluating keepered media are considering incorporating such heads into product programs that have target introduction dates in 1997. These heads could be used with or without keepered media. Therefore, the performance of keepered media with such heads may significantly affect the commercial prospects of keepered media for the near future. Initial tests with this generation of heads have indicated a post-channel linear density gain of approximately 20%. Ampex believes that additional capacity gains can be achieved by using the keepered media to increase track density, in addition to linear density, and also by optimizing read-channel electronics. However, pending completion of further testing and development, there can be no assurance that additional improvements in capacity can, in fact, be achieved. Additionally, it is not possible to forecast whether the performance improvement afforded by keepered media will be of sufficient magnitude to cause one or more disk drive manufacturers to adopt keepered media for future production. (The terms "post-channel" and "linear and track density" are explained in the March and June 1996 Forms 10-Q, respectively.)
3- Ampex believes that, at present, the major potential benefit of keepered media would be to permit the attainment of leading edge performance at a lower cost than would be possible using alternative technologies. The Company also believes that lower disk drive component costs may be especially critical in the high-volume, low price market segment for desktop disk drives, in which manufacturers' gross profit margins are relatively low. Accordingly, Ampex has now approached three manufacturers of hard disk drives that have significant shares of the desktop disk drive market to determine their interest in commencing a commercial product program incorporating keepered media. Ampex is currently holding discussions and negotiations with these and other disk drive manufacturers, but it is not possible at present to forecast whether any of these companies, or others that Ampex may approach in the future, will, in fact, undertake such a commercial product program.

As I understand it the CEO purchased the shares from the company's treasury stock. There seems to be no new news regarding information on keepered media through the 10q. We were well aware of discussions with a few disk drive makers on potentially incorporating keepered media in their disks in 97. I would have wished to hear that a disk drive maker was close to finalizing a contract with Ampex. To me, the 10q provides no evidence of a contract. The purchases by Bramson are a definite plus, but I agree H10258 that he would have not purchase the shares if he believed a conract was going to be signed in the next few weeks. The purchase would be too close to the signing of the conract. ============================================================= Subj: Re:CEO's purchase Date: 96-11-07 18:21:02 EST From: H102548

IMHO, the keys to interpret now are: 1. 10Q says NEGOTIATIONS are now in progress. Not talks. Not preliminary anything but NEGOTIATIONS. 2. Bramson bought another 400,000 shares. Even if Comdex does not produce the new announcements, all Bramson has to do is wait at least 30 days fr9om 10/25. I personally thank him for sending these legal signals. I just added another 10,500 shares to a very substantial holding. ===================================== |
