Charles:

It was the non-disclosure agreement that made him do it.

Actually, I currently handicap Western Digital and Quantum as the
2 most likely to adopt KM. Quantum, which contracts its
manufacturing to Matsushista/Kotobuki Electronics, does have
an aggressive MR program, but it also has an aggressive
inductive/contact recording head program targeted
at the low margin desktop disk drive market (e.g., the $999
Monorail sealed case computer with the LCD screen contains a
1GB Quantum disk drive). Western Digital also has an aggressive
MR program, but as has beeen discussed here, the MR
manufacturing learning curve is so steep and still so inefficient
that a prudent vertically integrated player has to continue to
extend the roadmap for the inductive head.

I am actually not surprised to hear that there are some AXC
engineers working at the WDC facility. The past 2 10Qs have
indicated that at least one disk drive maker has requested
AXC to push KM through durability tests. WDC has some of the
most rigorous durability test programs around, with some tests
going around the clock and taking as long as 6 weeks to complete.
The WDC web site actually has a detailed description of the
testing process, if you care to look. Thanks for the info, Harry.

Gus

P.S. Does anyone know how to value AXC's $99.0 million in
tax-loss carryovers which carry some restrictions due to AXC's
2 previous exchange offers? Wasn't there a change in the tax
laws that made it harder for an acquiring company to take
advantage of the tax benefits? TIA.
