Applied Innovation Introduces New Solution for Monitoring and Provisioning Network Elements Located in Small Central Offices, CEV's and Huts
DUBLIN, Ohio, June 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Applied Innovation Inc. (Nasdaq: AINN) today introduced the new Applied Innovation Mediator at Supercomm '98 being held in Atlanta, Georgia. Known as AIM, the product provides protocol conversion, mediation and concentration functions from Network Elements (NE) to Operations Support Systems (OSS). AIM offers a cost effective solution for telco sites which have a small number of NEs in locations such as small Central Offices (CO), Controlled Environmental Vaults (CEV) and Huts. It provides high visibility to ensure total network reliability.
The standard AIM unit provides a single Ethernet connection from the network and 8 connections to Async or X.25 NEs. One of these Async or X.25 ports may be utilized to provide a DCN/WAN connection to the operations center. An open card slot allows one additional interface module, such as a router, intelligent hub, or simply more Async and X.25 interfaces. A second power supply may be added for fail safe, redundant power.
The AIM unit, built to NEBS standards, may be equipped for a variety of protocols including: X.25, OSI, Async, TCP/IP, and Discrete alarms. Physical interface options include EIA-232, EIA-530, V.35 and UTP Ethernet. Conversions among different protocols and concentration of data onto a single trunk are key capabilities of the AIM.
A typical application for the AIM would be a small telco site, such as a small CO or CEV, which has one or more SONET NEs, environmental Discrete alarms, and power alarms. An example of a typical management interface would include X.25 for the SONET NE, contact closures for the environmental alarms and Async for monitoring the power. The DCN/WAN to the operations center side could be IP. Continuing with this example, the AIM connects to all three management protocols, concentrates the three into a single TL1 data stream, which then is sent along to the operations support system using a single IP connection. Dispatching a technician to the site for provisioning would be unnecessary since the AIM provides a data path that allows the NEs to be remotely monitored and managed.
