FastComm Responds To IBM Announcement Dropping Support For 3720 And 3725 FEPs

STERLING, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 8, 1998--
FastComm Communications Corp. FSCX reported today that its exclusive product, the ChanlComm(R) family of IBM Front End Processor (FEP) replacements, offers the ideal solution to customers affected by IBM's plan to drop support by year-end for two popular FEPs, IBM models 3725 and 3720. This action will force current customers to migrate, at a minimum, to the more expensive 3745 class of FEP.
FastComm's ChanlComm(R) 7745 Enterprise Communications Controller, an FEP replacement, provides data center managers a superior alternative to the IBM 3745. The 7745 does not require licensed IBM software such as NCP/SSP/EP, which greatly reduces the cost of ownership as compared to traditional FEPs. In addition, the ChanlComm(R) 7745 Enterprise Communications Controller provides user friendly control, enabling real-time/online configuration changes and performance monitoring. The online configuration capability alone is a life saver for sites forced to make frequent changes to their network. In the past, with standard FEPs, customers were forced to schedule this task well in advance, and typically in the middle of the night. Real-time performance monitoring capability assures customers they are getting the most out of their network, and speeds debugging of network performance issues.
The FastComm ChanlComm(R) 7745 Enterprise Communications Controller, currently shipping, is an advanced, channel-attached device, supports both byte and block multiplex channel configurations. Several high speed serial interface choices are provided. On the LAN side, both Token Ring and Ethernet will be supported. Advanced functionality includes IBM 370 and ES/9000 connectivity, as well as 43xx, 3090, and 9370. Support for Legacy-to-LAN gateways (Novell, Banyan, Attachmate, etc.) is provided, as is AS/400, S/36, S/38, and Cross Domain connectivity.
"I'm very pleased to announce our ChanlComm(R) product line," stated Peter Madsen, FastComm President. "Part of our growing LAN+Legacy(tm) suite of real world networking solutions, the ChanlComm(tm) family answers the prayers of stranded FEP customers, who otherwise would be forced into far more expensive, or far less functional solutions."
FastComm gives carriers, integrators and enterprise customers a "best-of-breed" platform for combining legacy and LAN applications, as businesses demand better solutions to the problem of integrating legacy applications into their LAN-based Intranets and Extranets.
With industry-leading LAN+Legacy(tm) application support, advanced features such as automatic Frame Relay configuration and self-learning, MaximumPRIORITY(tm) multi-stream prioritization, FastRATE(tm) adaptive congestion and CIR control, FramePROTECT(tm) data protection for mission critical applications, and optional managed, integral T1/E1 or DDS/DDS2 DSU/CSUs, and on-board ISDN interfaces for dial-networking and dial-backup, the data, voice and video capable FastComm products are the best value available.
