VTEL Video Network Technology Anchors China's First Emergency Mobile Videoconferencing Network VTEL Signs Agreement with China Telecom and Beijing Telecom
Beijing, China and Austin, Texas - (June 8, 1998) - Digital Visual CommunicationsSM technology from VTELr Corporation (NASDAQ: VTEL) is making mobile emergency medical care a reality in the People's Republic of China. VTEL announced today the signing of an agreement with China Telecom Bureau and Beijing Telecom Bureau to utilize VTEL's TC2000T group videoconferencing systems in the creation of China's first emergency mobile videoconferencing network. Thirty-six TC2000 systems, in 11 major meeting places across China, will assist in dealing with medical and environmental emergencies, disaster relief, events tracking, spot coverage, and television or radio relays. "This cooperative effort between VTEL and China Telecom will improve the emergency response capabilities of both medical and disaster personnel," said Jerry S. Benson, Jr., VTEL president and chief operating officer. "We are pleased with the growing number of deployments of VTEL's video network technology throughout China." China Telecom Bureau chose VTEL after rigorous examination and comparison of five different videoconferencing providers, focusing on picture quality, networking capabilities, technological advantages, stability and reliability, upgrade potential, post-sale services and pricing. A key factor in the selection of VTEL technology was its ability to transmit through many channels including satellite, fiber optics, digital microwave and ISDN. According to China Telecom Bureau, VTEL also won the contract because of its international prestige, abundant experience in building digital networks, and the technological leadership of the TC2000. VTEL's TC2000 conferencing system is ideal for the Chinese network because its features permit installation and access on enterprise-wide networks for data and document exchange and whiteboarding. The TC2000 also features VTEL's StandardsPlus VideoT, which provides the best image clarity and motion handling in the videoconferencing industry.
