Thanks for the comment and criticism well taken.

What I intended to say is that I agree with the view that PCs narrowly defined are a commodity. That is, if we take equally configured PCs from any two manufacturers, the market would probably see them as perfect substitutes. (Of course, this is really just a tautology) I'm speaking of the boxes only, not the services that box makers provide. My real point was that even if we concede the point that the boxes are a commodity, the overall business is not commoditized. If it were a commodity business, there would be no opportunity for entrepreneurship, no innovation, and no economic profit. As you suggest, until Dell's business environment becomes similar to its rivals it isn't a commodity business.
