Dutch, my hat is off to you if you can do this in three. I admit I cannot. I came up with this problem when I was asked to solve it when I knew the bad coin was lighter. I then asked my class to solve it if they didn't know if the bad coin was lighter or heavier. To date yours would be the only three balance solution that I have heard.

NOW PLEASE TELL ME HOW TO DO IT IN THREE!
