Jim,

Who is the source of these articles? Not questioning their authenticity, just curious.

So ETSI chooses WCDMA and then the Japanese have to decide what to do.NTT goes along with ERICY because it "strands" the other Japanese networks. QC refuses to grant IPR. ERICY says they don't need it. QC sues for infringement in the Euro and Japanese WCDMA trials. This could drag on for years, leaving network operators unsure of what to do. You would only build a CDMAone network under these circumstances if you were fairly certain that WCDMA could not be done without Q and that even if it could, you're willing to foregoe harmonization and all that it conotes, which means you'd have to understand all of these complex patent and political issues and think you know their outcome. I think it's going to be very difficult for Q to sell much infrastructure under this cloud without resorting to equity partnerships etc. Bad Weather and more volatility for Q investors unless Q demonstrates significant bottom line momentum soon...Ericy plays this game very well and obviously should not be underestimated, regardless of where the TRUTH lies.

I still don't understand why MOT,LU, and NT would be so quiet. What power does ERICY have over them? Would they be locked out of Europe if they spoke up and then the decision went against them?If these co's are so concerned about alienating GSM customers, then GSM operators must really be very afraid of CDMAone. If the new standard were promulgated at Q's desired chip rate would CDMAone operators move into Europe right away to compete? Are the economics of CDMAone networks so much better than GSM that these deeply entrenched operators need to be worried? Or is it that it's going to cost significantly more to upgrade to 3G from GSM, which would make IS95 very attractive, perhaps giving one a head start?? I keep harping on this same question and no one seems to know the answer, but it seems to be the only logical conclusion, which might also help to explain Q's hardened stance.. Why aren't Bell Atl, Air Touch etc. speaking up?

This Chicago Trib link is Internet Explorer only as far as I can tell. I wonder if Janet knows about this?......
