All this talk about Blackbird.............from another person's point of view. Here is the response that I received from a guy that is close to the action.
.......................................................
To put it in less confusing terms, Moto has developed a multi-media processor chipset. It would be more powerful than the existing ARM RISC that they are using right now for uniview but...it will cost more (like 3x more-chip cost) and what is more disconcerting is I don't think uni has the programming skills to do a new product without major investment (and time). At least with the ARM, the software was developed for them. Now they are responsible for themselves. The Moto products are usually quite good but from when I talked to them, production will not be till Q1'99. I just met some of the VPs at Moto Semi on Mon beginning of June and talked to them extensively about their multimedia plans. Incidentally, I don't think uni is a big fish for them since they inferred they were still looking for "serious" customers. I don't know why uni wants to continue down this path. webTV is doing nothing in this market and its just a feeble product to chase after. Sorta like trying to build another deLorean car. Why?
.......................................................
The key here once again is that the production will not be AT LEAST until Q1 of 1999. This was also told to Lenny by Neal several weeks ago when the news came out. I can not figure out why people on yahoo seem to think that this Blackbird product is just around the corner.....and it would add substantial revenues in a very short time. This thing is a long way off. Plus what makes people think that the timetable will not change? Also, so what will happen when and if the day comes that the Blackbird is now available for the platform of the newer uniView? Where are the 1,000's of retail stores that are selling the uniView now? My point,.............until they have an avenue to sell the uniViews to the consumers, what difference does it make what new upgrade they put into the product. These posters calling the Blackbird the best thing to happen have not been around the block with CM. Or if they have, they are simply not being realistic. We have a better chance to make revenues with these new companies that Custer is buying up in the next 12 months.
