BB,

Ouch.

"But Rick Whittington, an analyst with the Soundview Financial Group, took a bearish view, saying that Applied Materials's healthy order rate now would only cause excess chip capacity in the years to come.

First, I thought that Rick left Soundview more than a year ago; then started his own company. Perhaps my memory is wrong or perhaps he returned to a salaried position. ???

Second, Rick was the first to correctly predict the 95-96 downturn though his pronouncement was soundly jeered by all - professionals and amateurs alike.

In 85-86 the home PC market was in its infancy and even Businesses were quite selective in their deployment. ... but there was probably a lot less capacity to burn off than is the case today.

I had intended to re-enter AMAT near 25. If Whittington is right again, that might be quite premature.

Your take?

Ian.
