Hi Marcos - I think you'll find a pattern to the writings of various reporters. I'd be interested in seeing anything even approaching courageous that appears under the byline of Andrew Willis. Most everyone I know coast to coast considers him an almost shameless cheer-leader for industry insiders. It would be nice to think that he has done something more in the public interest on occasion.

The Globe's Karen Howlett is a reporter of great integrity and abilities as she has demonstrated throughout the years. "Without fear or favour" used to apply to good journalism - in a few cases it still does. And Dan Westell has written some interesting stories and taken on some rotten deals and dealers in his career.

There are others out there, but these types represent a vanishing breed. Tough and intelligent reporters who ask probing questions of the powerful (including big advertisers) are not necessarily favoured by editors and managers these days.

When you can get "scoops" at the same time as currying favour with industry players, ingratiating yourself with the mutual fund "gurus" and brokerage "kingpins", the role of a journalist becomes that of an advocate for the producers rather than for the public - when this happens the readers/investors invariably lose.

WE ARE ALL PORTER.

That's a good line. And may this be another situation that, in the perception of TSE president Rowland Fleming, does not tarnish the exchange's reputation!
