Intel To Slash Pentium II Prices
(07/16/97; 9:00 a.m. EDT)
By Mark Harrington, Computer Retail Week

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Intel will slash Pentium II 300-MHz processor prices by more than half on Aug. 1 as part of its plan to move the market to all Pentium II by mid-1998, according to an industry source. ...

The new strategy, expected to be kicked off with a major promotional blitz for the Pentium II starting next month, will position the Pentium II 266 MHz as Intel's entry-level microprocessor by mid-1998, the source said.

The price cut is unexpected; Intel's original strategy showed the P-II 300 maintaining a $1,940 price through Nov. 1. An updated price schedule shown to CRW indicated pricing for the Pentium II 300 MHz would drop to $830 on Aug. 1. .... The Pentium II 233 MHz, around $625, will move to $520 on Aug. 1, then drop to $446 on Nov. 1, according to the sheet. The Pentium II 266 MHz, around $760, will move on Aug. 1 to $655, then drop to $583 on Nov. 1."

Intel got what they wanted. But at what price?
