I know of profitable operations in Australia and NZ where wash a metre thick is profitable at grades of 0.4 g/cubic metre with 5 metres of overburden. Conventional earth moving (excavators) with trommel/jig recovery.

0.4 g/cubic metre is very close to US$3 per cubic yard.

Break even on these properties was just over 0.3 gram per cubic metre.
