NYSERNet Selects Newbridge Networks as Technology Ally
for Next Generation Internet in New York State

ATLANTA, GEORGIA--Newbridge Networks and NYSERNet (New York State
Education and Research Network) today announced an innovative
alliance to pioneer new networking technologies. Newbridge will
supply the broadband asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) network
switching solution for NYSERNet 2000, a high-speed, next
generation Internet infrastructure being developed to serve New
York's research and educational institutions. NYSERNet will
deploy and test Newbridge's new networking features and functions
on this advanced network, which is intended to lead the nation in
Quality of Service (QoS)-based Internet Protocol (IP) traffic
management.

This will be the Internet industry's first standards-based
solution for differentiated IP services over an ATM infrastructure
that is fully manageable and highly scalable, reliable, secure and
cost-effective. The networking innovation making this possible is
called Carrier Scale Internetworking (CSI), which was announced by
Newbridge, Siemens and 3Com in October 1997. It will enable
improved service provisioning and round-the-clock service control,
which cannot be accomplished using the current generation of
router-based networks.

The alliance with NYSERNet will provide Newbridge and other
corporate partners with an opportunity to test their latest
innovations in a wide area network (WAN) environment. The
Newbridge(R) solution includes the MainStreetXpress(TM) 36170
Multiservices Switch and the MainStreetXpress 46020 Network
Manager. The NYSERNet 2000 network will support IP over an ATM
infrastructure initially at OC12 speeds (622 Mbit/s). The NYSERNet
2000 network will be operational later this summer.

"This alliance will make NYSERNet 2000 unique among
implementations of Internet2," said Dr. Timothy Lance, Chairman,
Board of Directors, NYSERNet. "Newbridge's commitment to making
CSI available to NYSERNet and its leading-edge development of
networking technologies will ensure that we have an evolving
testbed and that we will remain at the forefront of network
development. This is a tremendous advantage for researchers and
educators in New York State since it puts them well ahead of their
counterparts nationwide."

"CSI is a perfect example of the forward-thinking corporate
strategy Newbridge upholds," said Michael Pascoe, Executive Vice
President and General Manager, America's Region, Newbridge
Networks. "Newbridge has shown its support for the Internet2
mission by serving as Corporate Partner, and we're excited to
extend that support through our relationship with NYSERNet.
NYSERNet 2000 provides us with a first-hand opportunity to explore
and develop in an operational environment networking solutions to
meet the exploding demand for advanced IP services."

"NYSERNet 2000 provides an exciting opportunity for collaboration
on advanced Internet technologies while exploring their future
products and services," said Howard Bussey, of Kodak's Network
Imaging Technology Center and a Member of the NYSERNet Board of
Directors. "The ability to share expertise with other research
organizations was a concept

Kodak found attractive from the start. The availability of
reliable, secure, differentiated IP services within the framework
of the NYSERNet ATM-based network makes opportunities like this
feasible."

Founded in 1985, NYSERNet (www.nysernet.org) is one of the
Internet's original not-for-profit pioneers. The world's first
Internet service provider, it has consistently been on the
Internet's leading edge, having upgraded its backbone to T1
(1.5Mbit/s) and to T3 (45 Mbit/s) years before these were widely
deployed Internet access services. NYSERNet's mission is to lead
the deployment of advanced networking services and innovative
applications. Nearly two dozen of New York State's leading
research and educational institutions are participating in the
NYSERNet 2000 initiative, including New York University, Columbia
University, Cornell University, Eastman-Kodak Research Labs, New
York Public Library and the American Museum of Natural History.

Newbridge Networks (NYSE: NN; TSE: NNC) designs, manufactures,
markets and services networking solutions to organizations in more
than 100 countries. Newbridge leverages its relationship with 16
Affiliate companies and alliances with Siemens and 3Com
Corporation to deliver seamless, end-to-end solutions. Its
