Hi Frank.
Your post demands a reply! <g> Several points I wanna make.
1. Good post! Meaty, with factoid content and personal analysis (and some attempt at keep the two separate <g>).
2. Now that you've listed the pros to 3FDX as an investment, I challenge you to list the cons -- and there are many. An investment decision should be the result of -complete- analysis. Show us you've got the whole egg and not just the yolks.
You said: TDFX has the best product shipping in the largest quantities.
Can you cite a reference for "largest quantities"? With so many non-public and division players in the business I find it hard to nail down accurate numbers about who's selling what, where, and when. I'm also skeptical about unreferenced claims regarding such.
Although 3-D action games are the primary application for 3-D acceleration, other games (and programs) will begin to take advantage of the availability of 3-D acceleration once it becomes commonly available.
This is one of your more interesting opinions. For quite some time now I've challeneged various people (amongst whom were several possessed of respectable technical acumen) to present a 3D APPLICATION with mass market potential. "Application" here means "Not a game". As you might expect, I've drawn nil so far. I'm personally of the opinion that no such killer 3D productivity app exists. Take a swing, Frank?
--- Re: Forsaken et al I agree Forsaken has quite astounding visuals, at even more astounding frame rates on my V2. Too bad there isn't much of a -game- attached to the superb visuals <WG>. (Dump your AKLM) If you want to see a great, great, great, great -game- (even though it's visuals are pathetic compared to a good V2 PC showcase) check out Gran Turismo for Sony PSX.
Unreal has excellent visuals but MUCH more hardware demanding; lousy framerates on my K6-233. Fortunately there's a -game- worth playing in Unreal. Bzone: is the V2 enhancement patch avail yet? The D3D visuals are nothing special. F22: PC fighter sims are getting kind of repetitive ... at least for me.
