(CNN) -- A retired Navy admiral who served as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in 1970 reaffirmed to CNN late Monday that the nerve gas sarin was used during the Vietnam War.

Adm. Thomas Moorer said he did not authorize the use of the nerve agent during a raid to kill American defectors in Laos in 1970, but became aware of its use after the mission, called Operation Tailwind.

Pentagon officials have insisted sarin gas was never used during the Vietnam War, although the chemical agent was in the Air Force arsenal at the time. .........
