I find this pricing announcement to miss a key figure, that is the break out pricing for the removeable media. Like a zip or jazz drive, you have the cost of the drive or player and the disk to contend with.
Again, it seems like an interesting app, but not widely necessary. I can imagine the advantage of carrying a 10 gig file that holds video or intensive CAD files. It was interesting to see the development of zip drives as people found it so convenient to carry a file to another computer.
In the near future, I hope, we will have greater bandwidth, or surely these high end users will, and theywon't need to hand carry large files. Then you'll also have write able DVD which should cover the low range of what a NFR can hold. So, that leaves system back up, and replacing tape. Do you think they can make a disk for less money than a tape? Are there handling issues, or longevity issues that could give these disks an edge over tape?
So, in the end it seems like a product with no application. Also seems like they'll have a hard time getting volume momentum in order make a quick price drop.
Again, I am curious how the market will react to HDTV? There is an issue where a VCR can not store the volume of an HDTV program. Where will the next home storage device come from? I would seem like the Japanese titans would have a DVD oriented solution in the pipe. I was introduced to this question by Gus. I sure miss his input.
