Well, Terrence,

Could it have something to do with the fact that from almost day one of life many children are paraded into a church where so-called church leaders proceed to pummel into these innocents feelings of unworthiness. It's not easy to overcome the propaganda that's forcefed into life's most vulnerable beings.

It takes years to separate the huge pile of junk from the small glints of gold in most religious teaching.

Many adults give up on the process somewhere in their teens or when they first experience true freedom of thought. They decide their religious training gave them more pain than gain in the past, so they'd be better off ignoring it.

Those with a philosophical bent continue the journey of the search for truth. Just ask Sam--his was a very wide, energetic search.
