Paul, Re: "Barrett took over control of the Intel wafer fabs in 1985/1986 at the very bottom
of a downhill slide in quality and yields."

I have an Intel experience around that timeframe that I can understand a lot more now that you mention Intel problems in 1985/1986. We had yield problems on our main memory array cards. It was a case of mixing different vendors' DRAM chips on array cards. All Intel or all Hitachi...no problem. Mixing the two caused failures. We finally traced it to the Intel 16K DRAM's putting noise on the +5 volt (I think) power bus, and messing up the Hitachi's. We ended up disqualifying Intel. I'd had good results with Intel to that point and, therefore, found this kind of hard to take. Post mortem, we decided to not ever mix different vendor's DRAM's on the same array card.

If Craig pulled it out of the fire, with a lot of help, I'm sure, GO CRAIG 1998 version. BTW, I thought his speaking at the stockholders' meeting, especially his handling of audience questions (some meant to make him or Andy stumble) was superb.
