Ameritech/RedBack Remember the April 27 WSTL announcement. I wonder if this will generate any revenue?

Ameritech Selects RedBack SMS 1000 FYI

Copyright c 1998 TeleChoice, Inc.

June 9, 1998 -- RedBack Networks, Inc. announced that
Ameritech has selected the Subscriber Management System
(SMS) from RedBack Networks, Inc., to accelerate the
deployment and enhance the scalability of their newly announced
DSL services.

The SMS 1000 can aggregate as many as 4000 DSL virtual
circuits or Frame Relay logical connections over high-speed links
generating from multiple Central Offices. It then converts all
incoming data traffic to IP, and transports it as a single logical
stream to ISP partners or enterprise customers over high-speed
links.

The "front-end processing" performed by the SMS 1000 relieves
the ISP backbone routers of heavy-duty frame translation that
cause congestion on high-volume networks. Thus, ISP partners
and enterprise customers can handle the extra volume of traffic
resulting from broadband access without adding any more router
power to their networks.

The SMS 1000's use of IP as the universal language, allows
Ameritech to integrate DSL users transparently into existing
network management and billing systems, without any costly
conversions or upgrades. SMS 1000 even acts as a RADIUS
client. Ameritech's ISP, Ameritech Interactive Media Services,
and enterprise customers who have standardized on RADIUS
can take advantage of familiar and well-understood tools to
authenticate and manage their DSL-based subscribers and end
users.

The SMS 1000 also supports new deployment models through a
unique capability known as "multiple context." This functionality
enables dynamic provider selection, allowing distribution of
broadband access services to multiple ISPs, and dynamic
service selection, allowing a carrier to effectively "re-target" each
dedicated connection to support multiple services dynamically.

A context is a virtual machine within the SMS 1000 that
provides a separate administrative domain for security,
accounting, and management of a high-speed access network.
Each context contains a unique routing entity, independent
address spaces and forwarding tables, and multiple RADIUS
clients to allow complete and secure data partitioning. The SMS
1000 binds end-user subscribers to the appropriate ISP partner
dynamically during authentication.

Ameritech can use multiple context to connect any end user to
the IP network service of choice. In this way, Ameritech can
enable a single DSL connection to support multiple types of
subscriber services, and associate a range of performance and
pricing levels to each new service.
