[Microvision's Virtual Retinal Display(TM) Technology Wins 1998 Discover Magazine Innovation Award in Sight Category]

SEATTLE, June 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Microvision, Inc.'s Virtual Retinal Display(TM) (VRD(TM)) was selected as the winner in the sight category of the Ninth Annual Discover Magazine Awards for Technological Innovation. The awards honor the "men and women whose contribution to technological innovation improves the quality of everyday life and alerts us to what's next on the frontiers of human achievement and ingenuity." Winners within each of nine categories were announced at a gala ceremony June 6 at the Walt Disney World's Epcot Center.

"We're thrilled that the VRD technology has received this notable distinction," said Microvision President and CEO Rick Rutkowski. "The VRD promises to have a revolutionary impact on society by enabling people to experience and utilize visual information in new and compelling ways. This honor is a testament to the hard work and commitment that our team has demonstrated to make the VRD technology a reality."

Discover Magazine is the country's leading general interest science magazine, which each month reaches 7 million new generation thought leaders who want to understand science's ever broadening impact on all areas of life. In April, Discover's editorial panel announced the selection of the VRD as one of 45 finalists from a field of more than 4,000 noteworthy entries in the following categories: transportation, aviation & aerospace; computer hardware & electronics; computer software; environment; sight; sound; emerging technology and robotics. The VRD's June 6th announcement as the winner in the sight category will be featured in Discover's July 1998 awards issue. The awards cited Dr. Thomas A. Furness III, director at the University of Washington's Human Interface Technology Lab (HIT lab), as one of the key innovators of VRD technology. Microvision holds exclusive licensing rights to the technology developed under a four-year research and development contract with the University of Washington.
