I don't buy it.

It is ludicrous to believe that Microsoft will not competitively pursue a strategic technology like streaming media. The only reason that they would drop out is if they no longer believed that this technology is strategic -- a very unlikely scenario. Microsoft may be putting on a "kinder and gentler" face towards the antitrust issue, but underneath, I bet they believe that this won't be an issue for them long term.
