M/D Totco(TM) Announces Introduction of Ergonomically
Advanced, Integrated Driller's Workstation
AUSTIN, Texas, June 9 /PRNewswire/ -- M/D Totco introduces V-ICIS(TM), the next generation Driller's
Workstation. V-ICIS -- Varco Integrated Control and Information System is an ergonomically advanced process
oriented driller's workstation designed to increase efficiency and decision quality while reducing fatigue and attention
lapses in a task that is at various times both dangerous and tedious.
A recently published ergonomic study of the driller's task concluded that conventional drilling instrumentation was a
mix of incongruous controls and devices that created an inefficient and confusing work environment. The driller's
attention was fragmented across many controls and panels usually not located in the desired field of vision path.
M/D Totco's design approach in solving these issues is to have the basic V-ICIS driller's workstation mounted on a
revolving base with a unique chair system which offers the driller the same ergonomic advantages of easy to reach
controls and task line-of sight, whether working seated or standing up. Four touch screen display monitors are
logically placed to be within the driller's field of view with the machinery being operated. Tasks and associated
machinery are selected from screen menu selections. Each screen provides the appropriate controls and information
to perform the required task while immediately presenting any developing alarm condition. The location of discrete
controls is based on sound ergonomic principles so they are reachable with sizes and positions to permit easy access
and quick, certain operation.
The driller's workstation also includes joysticks for responsive and reliable control of tools. Joysticks are used for
repetitive tasks where arm fatigue or great accuracy is a consideration. The variable-position armrests on the V-ICIS
driller's workstation enhance the usability of the joysticks,
Close integration of machinery and control operations through V-ICIS enables many processes and operation
sequences to be automated, offering the prospect of significantly increasing overall rig efficiency and reducing the risk
of operator error and occurrence of unscheduled events.
