Since NEC is interested in selling entire systems (not just line code transceivers), I find it easy to believe that they may be using Lucent chips in a VDSL type of system, and may be simultaneously developing VDSL transceivers with Amati based on DMT.>>>

Is there a way to check, first of all, if DAVIC-compliant specifically means CAP-16 and, secondly, if NEC has ever announced a partnership with LU on VDSL. It seems unlikely it wouldn't be in place already. I certainly don't want to break out the Champagne if Amati isn't involved.
