SIA says April chip sales fall slightly from March
SAN JOSE, (Reuters) - Global sales of semiconductor chips totaled $10.38 billion in April, a 0.5 percent dip from the previous month, the Semiconductor Industry Association, an industry trade group, said on Tuesday.
In the Asia-Pacific market, however, sales grew 4.1 percent to $2.4 billion from $2.3 billion in March, helping to offset dips in the three other regions tracked by the SIA: the Americas, Europe and Japan.
''With a second consecutive month of increased sales in the Asia-Pacific, we're seeing the beginnings of a recovery in that marketplace,'' Doug Andry, the SIA's director of information systems and finance, said in a statement.
The SIA said it expects to see all markets regain momentum in 1998's third quarter as increased use of the Internet should boost demand for personal computers.
On a year-to-year comparison, the global sales level was off 6.8 percent from April 1997's $11.14 billion.
Year-to-year sales grew slightly in Europe and the Asia-Pacific, but those gains did not offset an 11.6 percent decline in the Americas, to $3.35 billion from $3.8 billion, and a 14.1 percent drop in Japan, to $2.2 billion from $2.55 billion.

SAN JOSE, Calif., June 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Semiconductor sales in the Asia-Pacific market increased 4.1 percent in April, with world sales exceeding $10.38 billion, the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) reported today.
The positive sales growth in Asia-Pacific offset slight monthly declines in the Americas, Japanese and European markets. Overall, April's sales decreased 0.5 percent from March.
"With a second consecutive month of increased sales in Asia-Pacific, we're seeing the beginnings of a recovery in that marketplace," said Doug Andrey, SIA director of information systems and finance. "Likewise, we are expecting all markets to gain momentum in the third quarter. The explosion in Internet use will generate increased demand for personal computers and networking integrated circuits. Digital signal processor (DSPs) sales also grew 33.6 percent in 1997 and are expected to increase 23 percent in 1998 due to the growth of products such as personal communications equipment, home appliances, entertainment systems, medical diagnostic equipment, retail automation equipment and automotive systems."
April sales in the Asia-Pacific and European markets increased from year-ago totals, 1.4 percent and 0.5 percent, respectively. The total from all world markets in April, $10.38 billion, dipped 6.8 percent from $11.14 billion in April last year.
Data for the Global Sales Report was collected by WSTS, an organization that represents 70 companies. The SIA is the leading voice for the semiconductor industry and has represented U.S.-based manufacturers since 1977. SIA member companies comprise 90 percent of U.S.-based semiconductor production. Collectively, the chip industry employs a domestic workforce of 260,000 people.
