Paul, all, another new product, kind of...don't know how many will sell, but every little bit helps. I haven't seen it described here, if it has been, scusa mi.
Sun has developed an emulator (I guess you'd call it that) they call x86. With it, you can run Sun Solaris (their super version of UNIX) on Intel boxes. Apparently, the degradation factor, being an emulator, is minimal. My super sys-admin next door neighbor, office wise, told me today that we will be losing all of our Sun workstations, in favor of Intel boxes, which will run the x86 software. This is for the people that need to continue to use Solaris. The rest of us are content with 95 or NT, already on Intel boxes. Besides standardizing to all one PC base, in the company, the nice thing is that, getting rid of the Suns gets rid of monthly software license fees, which will pay in full for the new PC's that will be bought.
Another development is that Fujitsu is now marketing a product that is a PC set up to run Solaris, using x86. I noticed that Francis posted an article about a stronger alliance between Intel and Fujitsu. Good. They are no weak sister, like Integraph and DEC. In all due fairness to DEC, though, they seem to be wanting out of the FTC thing with Intel. Anybody see an Integraph workstation recently? About five years since I have seen one.
