Here's my perspective of screen real-estate:

Windows98 is gonna be up for grabs in a few days. It supports multiple cheep monitors. Monitors are dirt cheep these days - a $200 monitor (15-inch) will support 1280x1024 very nicely - and it's not that bad to look at. Just pay $800 for 4 monitors and purchase a bunch of those cheep $50 pci video cards and you've basically got 2560x2048 pixels of screen real-estate for much less than the cost of a 21-inch monitor that'd get you 1800x1400.

The Viewsonic 21-inch monitor is running at about $1,250. It'll get you 1800x1400 if you've got the video ($$) card to drive it. An 8mb Matrox that'd drive it costs about $225. Sony and NEC have 21-inch monitors that support 1600x1200 that cost more than the Viewsonic. Total cost of 4 15-inch monitors and 4 cheep video cards is $1k. Total cost of 1 21-inch monitor and really nice video card is about $1.5k.
