Be careful with your assumption of short covering. The AAII database shows that on 3-9-98 there were 18.2 days of shorts, and on 4-7-98 there were 9.5 days of short intererest. Over 8 days of short covering went on in between yet the stock fell from the low $30s during that time to mid $20s.
