hubert- it is my understanding that the whole purpose of the iso and the ieee standards were for the protection of the end user to ensure that the new piece of equipment would be compatable with another piece of equipment from a different manufacturer ie. bus line data addresses etc. in light of that fact, for all practical purposes this would only be necessary in a WAN environment, since presumably in a LAN environment all the equipment would be made by the same manufacturer. does this make sense or am i misinterpreting the basis for the standards?-bob
