Gov't lit against IBM fostered the env. MSFT grew in.

The environment of the 80's was DOMINATED by IBM. Without the US government stalling IBM's reach into the desktop and midrange there might not be a Microsoft, Intel, Oracle, Compaq, etc. IBM had the clout to do it at the time. They didn't aggressively enter the applications business either, although they were poised to do so.

We could (not will, but could) all be better off as a result of the anti-trust litigation against MSFT (and INTC). Not likely to hurt shareholders in the long run if something as drastic as a breakup were to occur. The applications division(s) certainly could stand on their own.

One thing is for sure, IBM will be better off as a result of litigation against Wintel -- keeps the spotlight off them while they quietly return to dominance. With only 5% of worldwide IT revenues flowing to them they still control the lions share of business computing and data storage.

Scott McNealy isn't the major beneficiary of these actions. I wonder if we, the consumers, will be?

IBM -- when can I get access to desktop apps from US West? Who needs Microsoft or Sun? (brought to you by a Mac, soon to be a settop device in the living room). Get the picture...

Food for thought, or debate...

Fly low, sell high...
