Jim,

I agree Celeron was a joke. It was outright pathetic by Intel standards. But Intel has a history of making money. They had to consider the effects of offering a product in the sub 1k market. Intel was careful about not cannibalizing their high end products.
I think they got it right with the 300MHz Celeron version, while offering faster PII's for the high end.

CPQ, Cyrix and AMD on the other hand jumped right in the Sub 1k market without fully grasping the ramifications of increased competition and outright price wars. When it came to making money, Intel was the one with business acuity.
