E, a woman scientist gave HAL the consciousness of her lover, a man who had a kind and careing personality. She realized that HAL would
one day become aware of the sensuality incorporated into his cognition
and want companionship. She sadly knew that HAL would be unable to
fullfill this desire until another advanced computer was built.
So the name, HAL, that she gave him stood for the phrase: Have A Love

The future for HAL, she hoped, was to have a love(r) someday.
