The Flash viewing software is free. Macromedia makes its money from Flash by selling graphics and animation software to developers. Financial terms of the agreement with Netscape were not disclosed.

Macromedia introduced Flash last year. Flash-based products now account for about 10 percent of Macromedia's total revenue.

This announcment goes a long way towards helping Flash become a standard on the web. When content creators can use Flash without worrying about plug-ins, I'm convinced that sales of Flash will increase. It could even pull along sales of other Macromedia products, like DreamWeaver.

Things are definitely moving in the right direction for Macromedia.
