Be still, my beating heart...... an HG column without the obligatory IOM cheap shot at the end:

Speaking of which: On Monday Hambrecht & Quist analyst Todd Baker injected new life into Iomega's stock (and added around $300 million to its market value) when he whispered that the company was likely to be mentioned later this week in conjunction with Compaq Computer (CPQ:NYSE). The thought was that Iomega had finally won a big contract from Compaq. Yesterday Iomega did get an order from Compaq to install Zip drives as standard features in most of its new Presario PCs. But Syquest (SYQT:Nasdaq) stole Iomega's thunder by announcing it had won a three-year contract from Compaq to install its SparQ drive in Compaq's built-to-order PCs -- the ones it'll use to compete against Dell (DELL:Nasdaq). The duration of Iomega's contract isn't known, which must be why investors knocked $131 million off its market cap yesterday.

But just for perspective: Yesterday Iomega's market cap stood at around $1.7 billion; Syquest's, $121 million.
