Digital Descriptor Systems, Inc. Announces Patent Pending Status of Compu-Scan
LANGHORNE, Pa., June 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Digital Descriptor Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: DDSI - news), a leading manufacturer and marketer of digitized imaging systems for the criminal justice and security markets, announced today that a United States patent application relating to its touchless fingerprint capture system that operates in real time has been filed. DDSI holds the exclusive worldwide rights to manufacture and market the system. World-wide patent protection will also be sought by the Company.
The market for law enforcement systems for automated fingerprint identification systems is expected to grow to $250 million in 2000 from about $120 million in 1997 and likely will exceed $300 million in 2002, according to a report published in November by Solomon Smith Barney Holdings Inc. in New York. DDSI is the leading vendor of computerized imaging mugshot systems with more than 350 locations installed worldwide.
The system, Compu-Scan, is briefcase size. Conventional systems are often as big as refrigerators. Compu-Scan will be priced about 25% less than competitive models. The fingerprint is captured when the finger is passed over an opening in the device. Due to its noncontact nature there is little training required for police or corrections officers. Therefore, there is less likelihood of false positives than with current competitive systems.
''Since neither the subject nor the operator touch the device while the fingerprint is captured, the likelihood of damage by wear, scratching of the glass platen, or damage to any other part during use are virtually non-existent and therefore less expensive for the jurisdiction,'' Garrett U. Cohn, President, said.
''The likelihood of obtaining poor fingerprint specimens is dramatically reduced when the system is used, even by inexperienced operators. Distortion due to smudges, insufficient or too much pressure during capture, improper rolling technique, oil, residue from prior use, and the like cannot occur,'' Cohn continued.
The Company plans to expand the system to include both portable and single digit verification models. This will expand the market for the system into other fields such as biometric identification, access control, welfare recipient identification and voter registration.
''We believe that the Compu-Scan system will be an important factor in helping the Company to become a major supplier in the multi-billion dollar biometrics industry. Thus, by combining the Company's Compu-Capture video mugshot system with its Compu-Scan system, a customer can purchase from one vendor a fully integrated system based on either primarily fingerprint or visual identification, with the other system being used for confirmation or back-up. The availability of the integrated system leads the Company to believe that it will become the vendor of choice in the livescan field,'' Cohn concluded.
The finger imaging output of the system can be used with most available verification and biometric identification programs.
It will be the first livescan capture system not to require a dedicated PC. It can be networked for enterprise-wide solutions. The system will verify the quality of the fingerprint (or palm print) before being stored, forwarded or printed on FBI-approved ten print cards.
Through its patent pending design concept Compu-Scan will be able to be integrated to DDSI booking station (Compu-Capture) or as an upgrade to other imaging booking systems.
