I am not currently doing UNIX sys admin but I am involved with many people who are. And the comments I stated earlier are from the large groups (ie. > 1000 workstations) Your environment and many other environment with a low number of machines is easy to manage. It gets much more difficult with the higher numbers and as I said earlier, for these three cases all of which are independent organizations, they are moving to NT workstations instead of purchasing new UNIX workstations. The NT boxes have from 1-4 P6/200s and they are being used on desktops and for smaller web servers. So I can't tell you the particulars here but I can tell you that this is the trend that I am seeing. I totally agree with you on your comments that UNIX admin is more difficult to learn and NT is easier to learn. Its another way that management is going to cut down on costs.

Real-time issues
You are indeed correct about hard real-time and UNIX vs NT. We are doing soft real-time where hard real-time is not necessary. People who can't afford multi-million dollar Convex or the other big hard real-time machines do soft real-time and get the same results which is what matters. There is a huge cost difference here and I will tell you that many government labs are reviewing this issue and are buying lower end machines. If your facility can afford it, you are lucky. In the past 3 years all I have heard from the government folks is "we just don't have the budgets anymore!". Note a comment in one of the Barron's articles last week which in essence stated, "The public has lived through corporate downsizing and restructuring and they have come to expect no less from the government." Not the exact quote - but this is the essense of it.

And I note your own facility is downsizing from Convex to SGI but there are many others downsizing from SGI to something else.

The hard real-time machines will always dominate the OFTs and perhaps a lot of the full-up engineering simulators but they are a small part of the real-time sim market. A lot of the remaining system can be and are being hosted on less expensive soft real-time machines.
