Chris, Taiwan is THE electronics powerhouse. And, no, it makes no sense that the SOX should hold while Taiwan drops.
I like Taiwan, both ROC and TWY, for the same reasons you do. The main thing is, this is not a debtor nation. They have the moolah to come out the other side of the crash with new fabs and greater market share. Remember when we were told that no OEM would buy Taiwanese DRAM. Well, they are growing that market share from somebody. It is tough for the cash-poor firms, like the Koreans and MU, to compete with a country that is rolling in dough. I believe they will keep the pressure on during this downturn, as will the Japanese. Note for example that with the Koreans slowing their growth a bit and MU having huge yield problems, that NEC is now the second largest DRAM producer again. Solid technology and lots of cash beat whining and import duties in the long run. <G>
