To Urlman regarding Indian computers being hacked,

These MilWORM guys seem to get a kick out of hacking largely mail/web servers. I doubt that even a reasonable amount of e-mail files would really contain extremely valuable data. Some of the sample mail seems to be from people who don't even know the details of the nuclear tests and don't even seem to believe that they were genuine! In short, not really people in the "know"! I doubt that someone would send the design of atomic weapons as an attachment to their e-mail. At least I hope not.

As far as logging in as root into mailservers is concerned, most reasonably managed sites keep webservers and mailservers as untrusted hosts in their networks for that reason so that becoming a root on that machine would not give them sweeping privileges across the network.

Regarding the Indian biomedical "hacking," changing a web page or getting e-mail files would be an accomplishment that only a hacker could appreciate. It may help boost their egos, and justify the late night hours they spent doing it, but I doubt that it would be of any significant consequence.
